Overview of Choose and Book

Choose and Book is an electronic booking system for patient referrals, introduced in Summer 2004, which facilitates the offering of a choice of hospital and clinic appointments to the patient. If the system configuration supports it, appointments can be booked by the GP in the practice or the patient can book later online or via a telephone call centre.

The User Experience

The Choose and Book system can be viewed as having 3 basic elements –

1. The Referring part, used by the GP to specify, initiate and book the referral
2. The Service Provider or ‘receiving’ part of the system where the hospital or clinic staff accept and process or reject the referral
3. The Directory of Services, the database in which all available clinics and services and their specific details are stored

Users of each of these elements must understand not only how to use the functionality, but the ‘best practice’ to follow for a smooth patient journey as well as be aware of the areas where the process could breakdown.
